RHS Young School Gardener of the Year 2017

Supported by Gabriel Ash

Ivanira Dos Santos
16 years old from Alexandra Park School, London
KS4/S3-4 Finalist

About Ivanira

Ivanira joined the school last year with very little English, using a translation website to communicate with her Land Studies teacher and explain how she was brought up on a farm in Africa. In the garden Ivanira demonstrates tireless enthusiasm and has built up a strong knowledge of plants and their requirements. The garden has allowed her to significantly improve both her confidence and her command of the English language.

Judges' comments

“Embracing the opportunities given to her at school, Ivanira has overcome language barriers and learnt a lot through her gardening experiences. It is heartwarming to see how much her school gardening experiences have helped her to improve her confidence in speaking not only English, but with Latin plant names, too.”

"Ivanira's an inspiration to other pupils at her school and it's clear that she has a passion for gardening and growing."
