Design a celebration poster

Activity

Design a poster to celebrate what has been grown in the garden. The poster can be used to advertise a harvest feast, a vegetable show, a plant sale or show the rest of the school what has been grown.

  • Estimated time: 45 minutes
  • Location: Outdoors & Indoors
  • School term: All year round
  • Level of experience: No experience needed
  • Subject(s): English, Art&DT

Learning objectives

  • Design an eye catching poster
  • Review growing achievements

Preparation

Ask the pupils to remember the plants they have been growing and the steps taken to sow, grow and look after these plants.

Print out photos taken during previous sessions.

Equipment

  • Camera
  • Photographs from previous sessions
  • Old seed catalogues or gardening magazines
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Paper
  • Pencils, crayons and felt tip pens

Step by step

  1. Start with some general discussion questions: What was the best bit about the growing topic? What has grown well and what hasn’t? How can we encourage parents to come along to the celebration or plant sale? Review all the skills the pupils have learnt and the experiences they have enjoyed together.
  2. Decide on the type of celebration the poster is for – a feast or picnic, a garden show, plant sale or a classroom display.
  3. Make the title of the celebration and date and time stand out clearly on your poster.
  4. Add in other things you have enjoyed or skills learnt.
  5. If the celebration is a feast, add in drawings or pictures of mouth watering food.
  6. If holding a plant sale, research the price of similar plants elsewhere and decide on the prices you will charge.

Hints & tips
