Use this method to take cuttings of plants that have 'soft wood' such as herbs, Pelargoniums, houseplants and climbers.
Softwood cuttings are best taken in spring when new growth apprears. They are the easiest type of cutting to take. Greenwood cuttings require the same technique but are taken later in the growing season.
Select all the materials you will need to take the cuttings
Fill the pots or module cells with potting compost
Take more of the plant then you need to allow you to cut the stem to the right length
Carefully remove the lower leaves
Look for a node on the stem- this is where you removed the leaves. The plant will root from here.
Cut below the node either with secateurs or scissors- remember to use them safely.
Prepare the cuttings so all are around the same length
Make a hole in the compost using a dibber
Insert the cuttings firmly, ensuring none of the leaves are below the compost or are touching each other
The finished cuttings should look like this, remember to label them.
Water the compost and ideally place the cuttings in a propagation case or clear cover in a warm place.
