March monthly gardening activities

Explore our monthly activities to do in the garden with your children and young people in March.

  1. Add organic mulch over your soil to help improve your soil structure.
  2. Hoe any weeds to keep them under control early.
  3. Mow your lawns if needed on dry days.
  4. Plant summer flowering bulbs such as dahlias, lilies and gladioli.
  5. Divide large clumps of perennials by using a sharp spade to cut through them.
  6. Increase watering of your houseplants. Make sure they are all in pots with drainage holes so they don’t sit in soggy compost.
  7. Sow tomato seed undercover in small pots or trays. Keep moist and warm on a windowsill or in a greenhouse until they germinate.
  8. Sow hardy vegetables such as peas, broad beans and cabbages in prepared beds outdoors.
  9. Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes in pots or prepared beds.
  10. Harvest your early crop of rhubarb from established plants.

  • Sow pollinator friendly plants now so they will flower in time for the June pollen gap - a time of year where pollinators such as bees and butterflies struggle to find enough plants with pollen and nectar.
  • Look out for frogspawn in your ponds - Make sure to provide plenty of rocks, logs and other hiding places around the site for adult frogs.
