Springhallow School - RHS School Gardening Team of the Year 2019

About Springhallow School

The team of nine pupils aged between 12 and 16 from Springhallow, a school for young people with autism, have worked together to create a beautiful and productive garden from scratch; challenging themselves to try new foods and supplying edible flowers and other produce to a new school café.

Gardening has also helped boost the team’s confidence, social and communication skills.

Judges' comments

"The pupils at Springhallow are a joy to behold. They have proven to themselves the merit of working outdoors. They support each other and have turned a wasted bit of land into a place of beauty and relaxation. I can’t wait to see what they do next!"

"The students of Springhallow have created something so wonderful in their school for everyone to benefit from and show that gardening truly is for anyone and everyone. The new school cafe is such a treasure and is enabling the students to grow even more skills through the act of serving and selling. The team show that really anything is possible with a bit of determination and passion."
