Schools' Wheelbarrow Competition

RHS Cardiff Flower Show 2017

About the competition:

Pre-schools and primary schools surrounding Cardiff are invited to get creative for the annual Schools' Wheelbarrow Competition, to be held at RHS Cardiff Flower Show on Friday 07 April - Sunday 09 April 2017.

Theme:

The theme this year is the 'Myths and Legends' to celebrate the Welsh 'Year of Legends'.

Your wheelbarrow can focus on any of the ancient myths and legends and their characters and can be as creative as you like!

Who can enter?

Entries are welcome from all pre-schools and primary schools (up to age 11 or year 6) from Cardiff, Caerphilly County Borough and the Vale of Glamorgan.

Schools must be registered with the RHS Campaign for School Gardening. If you're not registered click here.

There is no charge for entering and only one entry per school is permitted.

Only the first 60 entries received by the closing date will be allowed into the competition so enter soon!

Wheelbarrow criteria:

  • Must have planted material in the display and at lease 1/3 of it should be floral.
  • Should be fully waterproof including any papier mâché elements.
  • Consider how wind and rain could affect your design and plan accordingly. Your barrow could spend up to 5 nights outside, uncovered, on the showground.
  • Make both handles accessible for moving the barrow.
  • Make sure the wheel can turn freely and the tyre is pumped up as it will be wheeled to the showground.
  • To help with recycling we are offering £15 in National Garden Gift Vouchers to any entrant who can source their own wheelbarrow. If you don't have one, we can supply one, to be delivered in the fortnight after half term.
  • Approximate dimensions of the barrow are: length 1,400mm, width 550mm, height 580mm.
  • Approximate planting area: length 875mm, width 500mm, depth 300mm.
  • Your entry must be a single wheelbarrow.
  • Do not exceed the following measurements in your design: 30cm length or widthways from the barrow and 60cm in height from the soil level or have any freestanding elements; the barrow must be moved as one.
  • Wheelbarrows will be delivered to schools week beginning 27 February (unless sourcing your own).

Prizes are available for the three most popular wheelbarrows as voted for by the visitors to the show. The prizes will be as follows:
