Use this pictorial guide to help students sow small seeds.
Smaller seeds require a more controlled approach when sowing. Sowing aids are readily available and make the job easier.
Gather all the material together; a module tray, seeds, gloves, labels, compost & vermiculite to cover (if required).
Fill the module, pot or seed tray with compost until it is level. Tap on the bench 2-3 times to remove any air pockets in the compost.
Empty the seeds into the seed sower. It is far better to use a small amount each time and refill as required.
Move the seed sower from cell to cell leaving 2-3 seeds in each one.
Check the instructions on the seed packet. You may not need to cover the seeds. If you do use vermiculite cover them to a 3mm depth.
Remember to label the tray with the name of the plant & date. Place it in a shallow tray of water for 1-2 hours to soak and then remove it.
