RHS Young School Gardener of the Year 2017 Terms and Conditions

  1. The nominated young person must be at least 5 years of age by 31 March 2017 and 17 years of age or less on 31 August 2017. 
     
  2. The nominated young person must be in attendance at a school registered to the RHS Campaign for School Gardening that is within the UK (England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland). If your school is not currently registered, you can register free here.
     
  3. Nominations will only be accepted on an RHS Young School Gardener of the Year entry form completed and signed by a responsible adult aged 18 years and over, hereinafter termed ‘The Proposer’. 
     
  4. The Proposer must be an appointed representative of a school.  For example a teacher, teaching assistant, parent helper or volunteer, a school governor or member of a Parent Teacher Association.
     
  5. Only one entry form will be accepted per young person. In the case where two are received, only the first received will be accepted.
     
  6. All entries must be emailed to schoolgardening@rhs.org.uk with Young School Gardener in the subject heading or posted to: RHS Campaign for School Gardening, RHS Garden Wisley, Woking GU23 6QB.
     
  7. The entry form must be received by the RHS by the closing date of 5pm on Friday 28 April 2017. Responsibility cannot be accepted for lost, damaged or mislaid entries. Proof of sending by email or postage is not proof of receipt.
     
  8. The details provided by The Proposer will be used for the purpose of shortlisting for this competition only. By submitting a nomination The Proposer confirms that they have the permission of the parent or guardian of the nominated young person. 
     
  9. After the closing date the RHS will shortlist 16 young persons (three in each category), herein termed ‘The Finalists’. Their Proposers will be notified by 5pm on Wednesday 10 May 2017 if their nomination has been shortlisted. The Finalists’ details will be used to seek consent from the young person where appropriate or the parent or guardian that their young person’s name, school name and location and young person’s photo/film can be used for any purposes the RHS deems appropriate in connection with the RHS Young School Gardener of the Year, including publication on the RHS and/or Campaign for School Gardening websites. 
     
  10. By submitting a nomination The Proposer, as a nominated representative of the school, acknowledges that they have obtained the school’s consent to its name and address being published in connection with receiving a prize and agrees to the RHS disclosing the school name and address on the RHS and/or Campaign for School Gardening website and to any individual requesting the name of the recipient schools. The school also agrees to take part in any publicity as conducted by the RHS Press Office or Campaign for School Gardening team. 
     
  11. A list of the 16 Finalists will be posted on the RHS and/ or RHS Campaign for School Gardening website. 
     
  12. Each Finalist’s school will receive a digital camera to make a film to be submitted for the second stage of judging. It is at the school’s discretion whether the camera is retained by the school or presented to the young person nominated. 
     
  13. The closing date for the RHS receiving the films is 5pm on Friday 02 June 2017.
     
  14. The Winners and Finalists, plus up to two guests, will be invited to RHS Garden Wisley for a Prize Giving Ceremony on Saturday 01 July 2017, where they will receive their prize from a VIP. The RHS reserves the right to restrict the number of guests per Finalist.
     
  15. Each of the 16 Finalists will receive a certificate and an engraved hand trowel at the Prize Giving Ceremony on 01 July 2017. Following the competition, their schools will receive a Gabriel Ash Baby Grand Coldframe.
     
  16. Four Finalists will be selected as Winners (one from each age-category), from which an Overall Winner will be chosen. Their Proposers will be notified by 5pm on Wednesday 14 June 2017 if their nominee is a Winner or Overall Winner. The Winner and Overall Winner will be listed on the RHS Campaign for School Gardening website.
     
  17. The schools of the finalists who are not winners will receive £10 in National Garden Gift vouchers. Winners will receive a set of gardening tools and their schools will receive £250 in National Garden Gift vouchers.
     
  18. In addition, the Overall Winner of RHS Young School Gardener of the Year 2017 will be invited to their nearest RHS Garden to spend the day working with RHS gardeners. They will also receive two adult and (up to) four child tickets for either RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2018 or RHS Tatton Park Flower Show 2018 and their school will receive an extra £250 in National Garden Gift vouchers – a total of £500. A celebrity gardener will visit the school for a day. 
     
  19. All decisions of the RHS are final and no correspondence regarding the finalists or Winners can be entered into. 
     
  20. The prizes must be accepted as stated and cannot be altered. There will be no cash alternatives. Vouchers cannot be exchanged for their value. 
     
  21. By sending in the entry form to the RHS you will be deemed to have accepted the terms and conditions and to have agreed to be bound by them. 
     
  22. These terms and conditions are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
     
  23. The RHS reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions at any time by publication on the RHS and/ or Campaign for School Gardening website.  
     
  24. RHS Young School Gardener of the Year, RHS School Gardening Champion of the Year and RHS School Gardening Team of the Year is open to UK residents, excluding i) employees, agents or subcontractors of the RHS, ii)  any Competition sponsor or its employees, agents or subcontractor, iii) the immediate families of such employees, agents subcontractors or sponsors.
