RHS Young School Gardener of the Year 2015

Jack Phillips
16 years old from South Wigston High School in South Wigston, Leicester
KS4/S3-4 Finalist

About Jack

Jack has been working on the school garden for two years and fits naturally in this environment. In the past Jack has struggled in subjects to keep focused but since joining the garden, he has blossomed. He is one of the few school age students in the UK studying the RHS Level 1 Qualification in Practical Horticulture and has excelled in all areas of the course, in particular identifying plants by their botanical names.

Jack is very careful in his work, sowing seeds in the correct way for individual plants, ensuring they thrive, taking cuttings and implementing crop rotation systems in the garden to minimise pests and diseases. Everything Jack learns he retains and implements in his work. He has been influential in landscaping the school grounds, planting shrubs for other students to enjoy. Jack is keen to pursue gardening after he leaves school as has applied for a place at Brooksby Melton College to study horticulture.

Judges’ comments

“Jack reeled off Latin names better than a lot of people I work with (myself included!) and showed such a strong talent for growing. His dedication to learning horticulture also extended as far working towards a qualification. The drive and determination to learn and excel is his subject was truly humbling.”

“Jack’s long-term commitment to horticulture is clear, with a demonstrable skill in both plant ID and cultivation. His voluntary contribution to the community allotment also shows his understanding of the value of sharing his passion with others. I hope we’ve seen a real future talent in him!”

“We really liked Jack’s natural presenting skills in the film.  You took us on a lovely walk through the garden. We wish you every success with your RHS Level One examination.”

“Jack, well done. Your commitment to horticulture is just what this industry needs and I am sure you will be inspiring many others to follow suit in the future. Brilliant!”

“Jack’s clear determination to learn and improve is obvious.”
