RHS School Gardening Champion of the Year 2016

David Cubbin
Teaching Assistant from Millbrook Primary School, Stalybridge, Greater Manchester

About David

David established a garden at school, including seven vegetable beds, so now each class has the opportunity to grow vegetables and see where their food comes from. He has also created a sensory garden to encourage pupils to reflect and nurture plants. David also runs an after school gardening club for parents and children, as well as a cooking club to use the produce that they have grown.

Judges' comments

“David manages to get the sense of awe and wonder in gardening across to the children, making the garden a magical and exciting place for them to grow and learn. It’s wonderful to see how gardening is a whole-school programme and that the children are able to have a go at growing their own food.”

“As the school is situated in an area of deprivation, I love that David is giving the children the opportunity to learn where their food comes from by growing it and cooking it in school. He also encourages parents and adults to get involved which will benefit the families in the community immensely.”

“David is giving pupils at Millbrook experiences and skills that are so important for their development. His passion for “growing children” is clear and the pupils looked like they loved learning with him.”
