RHS Young School Gardener of the Year 2015

Dean Gordon
16 years old from Linwood High School in Linwood, Renfrewshire
KS4/S3-4 Finalist

About Dean

Dean is an inspiration to many in the school’s gardening club and a wonderful example of what gardening can do for a person. Before the garden was created, Dean was a quiet boy who rarely spoke but then he found gardening. The whole school came together to build the Craig Hepburn Memorial Garden and Outdoor Learning Centre, a garden to commemorate the life of the former pupil. Dean was heavily involved in building the garden, spending hours on hard landscaping and sowing and growing plants to bring it to life. Here Dean found his voice.

Dean has a genuine interest in horticulture and has even convinced his father to let him use a section of garden at home to grow fruit and vegetables. He spent a recent bout of work experience at a local nursery where he was propagating, watering and potting up plants which he thoroughly enjoyed and was offered a summer job there as a result. Dean helps with the local Linwood in Bloom group and is working with over 260 pupils from other local schools. In just a couple of years, Dean’s confidence and knowledge has grown immeasurably and is a credit to his school and community.
