About St. Christopher's CE High School

The eco group at St. Christopher’s has an excellent knowledge of gardening, better than most staff, and often giving advice to teachers. They have constructed raised beds, shifted over six tonnes of compost and planted various fruit trees and small saplings across school. The senior eco team coordinates their year group peers and help younger children learn skills and help develop their confidence. The students meet termly to discuss whole school plans and meet twice a week to maintain the seven outdoor beds and 36’ polytunnel.

The group is an integral part to the school’s Sustainability Conference, which last year had over 400 attendees from primary and secondary schools, by organising and hosting workshops and discussing recent projects. The group has worked on many other community projects such as leading eco days in local primary schools, donating older tools to rehabilitate drug users and growing seeds for the Alzheimer’s Society. The group is currently working on a book which will encourage young people, particularly those leaving home for the first time, to reduce waste and grow their own crops.

Judges’ comments

“The work that the pupils at St Christopher's CE High School is absolutely fantastic. To learn the importance of growing for sustainability and also to promote self-sufficiency is a commendable thing and something that would make a huge difference to the country, and indeed the world, were all schools to adopt such a strategy. The pupils clearly love this subject too and get a great deal from learning about it.”

“The pupils really seem to understand the effort in food growing and the importance of the environment. It is great to see the polytunnel being used for more than just growing (for example the hanging baskets and church service).”

“They not only garden but look after the wildlife and encourage sustainability in their community.”
