Monster Pumpkins competition results

In the spring, we ran a prize draw and gave 100 lucky schools Monster Pumpkin seeds harvested from RHS fruit and vegetable expert, Matthew Oliver's award-winning, 340kg pumpkin.

Schools across the country battled to keep their pumpkin plants alive through a long hot summer. Not all of the seeds germinated, and many of those that got to the flower stage failed to pollinate.

Against the odds, a number of schools managed to raise Monster Pumpkins and submitted their final estimated pumpkin weights to us at the end of September, in line with our competition deadline.

We are pleased to reveal the final leaderboard below. Congratulations to everyone who received seeds and gave growing them a go - whatever the outcome!

Our pumpkin

The Campaign for School Gardening team grew a pumpkin from the same seeds we sent to schools this summer. We estimated that our pumpkin is 115kg - it had to get transported on a forklift truck to be moved around here at RHS Garden Wisley!

The biggest Monster Pumpkin of them all!

Matthew Oliver, who very kindly gave us the seeds for our Monster Pumpkins competition also took part in the challenge this summer, at RHS Garden Hyde Hall. From the very same seeds we gave away for the competition, he managed to grow a Monster Pumpkin that weighs an incredible 264.4kg!

If you are based near to RHS Garden Hyde Hall, why not take your school pumpkin along to the Pumpkin Weigh-off Day on Saturday 20 October 2018? Matt will be head judge, and the heaviest pumpkins will take pride of place on a winners' podium!
