Schools' Bug Hotel Design Competition
RHS Chatsworth Flower Show 2017
About the Competition:
Schools in the Midlands are invited to come up with their best looking bug hotel for the first ever schools' competition at RHS Chatsworth Flower Show on Wednesday 07 June - Sunday 11 June 2017.
The flower show itself will be celebrating 'Design Revolutionaries' so we would like your bug hotel design to fit the theme 'Inspiring Architecture: Past, Present and Future'.
Maybe you want to model your bug hotel on a famous building or take design tips from some of the world's most influential architects. Perhaps you want to bring a contemporary feel to your design or dream up a new, creative design celebrating the future of gardening and architecture.
Who can enter?
Entries are welcome from all primary and secondary schools and conservation/wildlife clubs (up to the age 15 or Year 10) from the following counties of England: Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Yorkshire and West Midlands.
Schools must also be registered with the RHS Campaign for School Gardening. If you're not registered yet, click here.
There is no charge for entering and only one entry per school or club is permitted.
Bug hotel criteria:
Every bug hotel must include elements of plant material which can be a mixture of dried or living. Minimum requirements are that at least 10% of the Bug Hotel is planted. This could be in the form of a green roof or within the structure to make the bugs feel cosy and at home.
Bug hotels should be well made and made from scratch. You are encouraged to use recycled materials but it is important that the hotels are substantial and able to withstand all weather conditions.
The minimum base size is the size of a standard pallet 1200mm x 1000m x 150mm with a maximum height of 1.5m. There should be no loose or easily detachable parts.
Imitation plant material should not be used.
You may use props to accessories or enhance your hotel.
Bug hotels must follow the theme ‘Celebrating inspiring architecture; past, present and future’.
Your entry may be a single bug hotel or a group.
Please read the full Bug Hotels Factsheet for information on staging your bug hotel and for further information.
Prizes are available for the three most popular bug hotels as voted for by the visitors to the show. The prizes will be as follows:

2nd prize - £125 Garden Centre Vouchers and a certificate
