We hope you have fun designing them and we look forward to seeing your submissions!

General Information

  • No charge is made for entering the Wheelbarrow Competition.
  • Only one entry per school is permitted.

Wheelbarrows

  • Must have planted material in the display and at least 1/3 of it should be floral.
  • Should be fully waterproof including any papier mâché elements.
  • Consider how wind and rain could affect your design and plan accordingly. Your barrow could spend up to 5 nights outside, uncovered on the showground.
  • Make both handles accessible for moving the barrow.
  • Make sure the wheel can turn freely and the tyre in pumped up as it will be wheeled to the showground.
  • To help with recycling, which is important to all of us, we are offering £15 National Garden Gift vouchers to any entrant who can source their own wheelbarrow. If you don't have one, we can supply one, to be delivered in the fortnight after half term. The vouchers can be spent anywhere that accepts them, and you can choose what you spend them on.
  • Approx. dimensions of the barrow are: total length 1,400mm, width 550mm, height 580mm.
  • Planting area: approximately length: 875mm, width 500mm, depth 300mm.
  • Your entry must be a single wheelbarrow.
  • Do not exceed the following measurements in your design: 30cm length or widthways from the barrow and 60cm in height from the soil level or have any freestanding elements; the barrow must be moved as one.
  • Wheelbarrows will be delivered to the schools week beginning 27 February, unless you are sourcing your own.

How to get your barrow to Bute Park

  • Any school can choose to deliver their barrow to Cardiff (Bute Park Nursery) up to and including Wednesday 05 April 2017.
  • Cardiff schools: if you require collection, your barrow will need to be ready by Sunday 19 March, as collection will be during the week 20-24 March. An appointment system will be used to collect the barrows and a specific day will be allocated to you.
  • Caerphilly schools: you will take your barrows to Morgan Jones Park, date to be advised within 20-24 March.
  • Vale of Glamorgan School: you will take your barrows to Court Road Depot - date to be advised within 20-24 March.
  • Once we take responsibility for your barrow, we will only undertake watering.
